However, several studies have demonstrated that mental representations of space seem difficult to build when turn-by-turn instructions only are provided. This is a crucial point as getting an accurate spatial representation of the surroundings can make the difference between successful and unsuccessful navigation. In this paper, we describe components of a guidance system designed to provide a better service in wearable electronic orientation aids for the visually impaired. They especially include non-visual landmarks and points of interest that are used as environmental features to improve mental spatial representations. %G English %Z TC 13 %2 https://inria.hal.science/hal-01597024/document %2 https://inria.hal.science/hal-01597024/file/978-3-642-23768-3_98_Chapter.pdf %L hal-01597024 %U https://inria.hal.science/hal-01597024 %~ UNIV-TLSE2 %~ UNIV-TLSE3 %~ CNRS %~ UT1-CAPITOLE %~ IFIP-LNCS %~ IFIP %~ IFIP-TC13 %~ IFIP-INTERACT %~ IFIP-LNCS-6949 %~ IRIT %~ IRIT-ELIPSE %~ IRIT-ICI %~ IRIT-CNRS %~ TOULOUSE-INP %~ UNIV-UT3 %~ UT3-INP %~ UT3-TOULOUSEINP
