In this paper, we offer a short overview of historical evolution of the field with an emphasis on popular performance modeling techniques such as queuing networks and Petri nets. A review of recent works that provide new perspectives to software tools for performance modeling is presented, followed by a number of ideas on future research directions for the area. %G English %Z TC 6 %Z TC 7 %Z WG 6.3 %Z WG 7.3 %2 https://inria.hal.science/hal-01586901/document %2 https://inria.hal.science/hal-01586901/file/978-3-642-25575-5_3_Chapter.pdf %L hal-01586901 %U https://inria.hal.science/hal-01586901 %~ IFIP-LNCS %~ IFIP %~ IFIP-TC %~ IFIP-WG %~ IFIP-TC7 %~ IFIP-TC6 %~ IFIP-LNCS-6821 %~ IFIP-PERFORM %~ IFIP-WG6-3 %~ IFIP-WG7-3
